According to a new report issued today by Fitch Ratings, the U.S. Telecom andCable sector's liquidity has remained strong and margins have remained solid inthe face of competitive pressures.Fourth-quarter liquidity remained strong, with 87% of committed facilitiesavailable for borrowing and total liquidity exceeding aggregate 2012, 2013, and2014 maturities by $12 billion. Latest 12 months (LTM) free cash flow (FCF)generated in the fourth quarter was $28 billion, and issuers maintained balancesheet cash and short-term investments balances of approximately $40 billion.This compares to Fitch-estimated 2012 maturity schedule of $13 billion.Margins have remained relatively stable in the face of persistent competitivepressures. Aggregate LTM EBITDA margins declined 100 bps quarter-over-quarterand 140 bps year-over-year to 32.0%.Sprint Nextel's LTM EBITDA margins suffered the largest declines in theportfolio with a 200 bps decline quarter-over-quarter and a 270 bps declineyear-over-year, primarily resulting from increased iPhone subsidies as Sprintlooks to improve its competitive profile. Rising subscriber acquisition costscould pressure margins in near-term until a rebalancing from ARPU expansionachieves scale.Issuers have continued to funnel FCF to shareholders in the form of dividendsand share repurchase. Dividends and share repurchases for 2011 increased byapproximately 13% and 39%, respectively, from 2010. Fitch expects issuers tocontinue channeling excess FCF to shareholders in the near term, especially ascapital intensity rates have leveled off to normalized rates and acquisitionactivity has remained tepid since the first half of 2011.
Netherlands based KPN has announced that it is putting its ownership of itsGerman subsidiary, E-Plus under consideration as it seeks to fight off a bid byAmйrica Mуvil to buy a large stake in the company.This is the second German mobile network that faces a review of its ownershipafter Telefonica announced plans to sell a stake in O2 Germany via a stockmarket floatation.In a statement, KPN said that the board of directors has ordered a review ofstrategic options for E-Plus to unlock value embedded in the German business.KPN has already announced a comprehensive review of strategic options in respectof its mobile operations in Belgium and this process is ongoing.The company reiterated previous comments that Amйrica Mуvil's offer of EUR8per share to buy up to 27.7% of the company undervalues its long term value. Themove has however forced the company to step up its pace to improve the company'sshare price performance which has lagged over the past few years.KPN also noted that by targeting only a 27.7% stake, Amйrica Mуvildeliberately remains just below the 30% mandatory public offer threshold,thereby avoiding the requirement to make an offer for all outstanding KPN sharesand they claimed, potentially deterring other third parties from making an offerfor the whole of KPN in the future.The KPN Boards concluded that the price Amйrica Mуvil is offering is toolow for gaining significant influence over KPN and substantially undervalued KPNon a standalone basis.
Production has started on high-resolution displays for Apple'snext-generation iPad 3 tablet, while the company is mulling a smaller mid-sizediPad further down the road, an analyst told has CNET."It's happening--QXGA, 2048x1536. Panel production has started. There'sthree suppliers," Richard Shim, an analyst at DisplaySearch, said in aninterview today.Shim also confirmed other reports that cite three companies, Samsung, Sharp,and LGD as the suppliers.The new screen would offer a resolution that it double that available on thecurrent iPad device.Shim told CNET that finished devices could start being warehoused by the endof this year, with shipments starting in January and mass-market volumes fromMarch.The mid-sized model, if it is developed, may be due in late 2012.On the web: CNET
Yankee Group research shows that while mobile transaction usage is growing,consumers show little willingness to pay for these services. The company'sforecasts predict unprecedented growth in mobile transactions worldwide, withthe total value of global mobile transactions increasing from $162 billion in2010 to $984 billion in 2014.However, Yankee Group's consumer survey results show that less than 10percent of respondents would be willing to pay extra for mobile transactionservices such as mobile banking, mobile coupons and mobile payments."Every silver lining comes with a big, dark cloud and the explosion inmobile transactions is much the same," said Nick Holland, senior analyst atYankee Group and author of the new report "A View from the Trenches: WhatConsumers Think of Mobile Transactions." "Although mobile transactionservice usage is increasing phenomenally, consumers show little interest inpaying any additional fees for them. If banks, mobile operators, card networksand retailers want to tap mobile transactions as a revenue stream, they'llneed to come up with more creative schemes than per-transaction fees."Yankee Group's mobile transaction forecast tracks metrics on mobilebanking, international and domestic remittances, contactless cards, mobilecoupons and NFC communications. Other forecast findings include:Asia-Pacific overtakes EMEA as the mobile banking powerhouse: In 2010,EMEA leads all regions with 42 percent of worldwide active mobile bankingusers, followed by Asia-Pacific (38 percent), North America (16 percent) andLatin America (4 percent)- but by 2014, Asia-Pacific leads with 54 percent,followed by EMEA (32 percent), North America (10 percent) and Latin America(4 percent).Mobile coupon usage explodes: The number of active mobile coupon users isexpected to grow from 2.7 million in 2010 to nearly 35 million in 2014.Near field communications (NFC) takes off: The number of NFC-enabledphones will grow from just 834,000 in 2010 to 151 million in 2014, a CAGR ofmore than 300 percent. Similarly, the value of NFC-based transactions willexplode from $27 million in 2010 to $40 billion in 2014.
Mozilla has announced that new launches of Firefox OS smartphones will beginsoon with more devices and in more markets around the world.Firefox OS phones are currently available from Telefуnica in Spain, Colombiaand Venezuela and Deutsche Telekom in Poland.Telefуnica now aims to launch Firefox OS based smartphones in Brazil andthree other Latin America markets during Q4 2013. Deutsche Telekom plans torelease the phones in Greece and Hungary, and for their youth brand in Germany."We continue to enhance Firefox OS to deliver the best experience for themany people around the world buying their first smartphones. A look at mobile user attitudes by McCann Truth Central has decided that mostmobile phone users exhibit teenage like behaviour with their devices."Globally, the average consumer has only been a mobile user for 12years," said Laura Simpson, Global Director, McCann Truth Central."That means that, in mobile years, it's as if we're all just becomingteenagers. And like most teens, we're taking risks and trying new things. Ourdata shows that in their relatively young adolescent mobile lives, consumershave owned 6.4 devices and entered into a serious relationship with a new mobiledevice or provider every 22 months.""Our mobile teenage years create fantastic opportunities for brands toenhance their relationships with their customers," said Kevin Nelson ,McCann's Global Telecom Lead. "But brands need to understand that peoplehold mobile to a higher standard than other mediums. This is because mobile ismore personal, less like a TV or PC, and more like an extension of ourselves.Brands that respect this unique relationship will be championed and the ones whodon't will quickly find themselves screened out."Who am I anyway?Teens are often on a quest to discover their true selves and define their ownunique personalities. Surprisingly, the study revealed that people's mobilepersonalities are often very different from their "face to face"personalities. The study shows that 74% of respondents saythat their mobiles have helped them to "fit in" rather than stand out.While 55% say that they judge people by the devices they own, 40% say they judgepeople by the mobile network operator they choose.In Japan, a woman said, "There is a guy at work who has a rabbit as aphone cover, and I feel that type of cover is for a student. I worry whether Ican do business with such guy."The mobile advertising and network carrier opportunityAccording to the study, 63% of people wish that the advertising they saw ontheir phone or tablet was more entertaining. At the same time, mobileadvertising can be a real opportunity for brands to connect with consumers, thestudy found.When mobile ads are fun and provide utility, consumers are keen to jump in.After seeing an interactive game on mobile, a consumer in the Philippines said,"I like that it's a game where you can win real prizes. You can reallyenjoy it, not just alone, but also with your friends."Could mobile save the world?The study also revealed a lot of excitement and hope among adult mobile phoneusers about the future world that mobile can deliver, an optimistic viewpointthat continued to liken them to teenagers.Nearly 40% of people thought that mobile technology will make us more likelyto develop global solutions for crime, 21% thought mobile technology can help usavoid global economic crises, and 16% thought mobile could help alleviatepandemic flu outbreaks.
